Welcome to the Warwickshire Local History Society

Warwickshire Local History Society Annual General Meeting 2024.

A reminder that the next WLHS AGM will be held on Tuesday 16th April at 7.15 pm at our usual venue for evening talks, the Primary School Hall at Aylesford School, Tapping Way, Warwick.  The business meeting will be followed by a talk from Louise Essex, local studies librarian. She will draw on her experience in Nuneaton and elsewhere to explore the potential  contribution of public libraries to local historical research.  You can view the AGM papers by clicking on this link: AGM papers.  These papers will also be emailed (or posted, for those without access to email) to all members.

Important Announcement: Monica Ory

We regret to have to tell members that Monica Ory died on 24 June.

Monica was deputy County Archivist of Warwickshire, 1967-1996, and was closely involved with the record office's move to new premises in Priory Park (1973), and in the then groundbreaking purchase of the Warwick Castle archives (1978). Many of us will have been helped by her in the searchroom, both directly and via her archival descriptions and subject index. She was a member of WLHS for many years and served on the committee until two years ago. She also helped with catering at society events, and many of us have very fond memories of her puddings and cakes.  In recent times she had been living near her brother in Nottinghamshire.

WLHS has a new Programme Secretary (Lectures).

Following Jim Ranahan's successful tenure of this post, we are pleased to announce that we have a new Programmes Secretary (Lectures).  Dr Ruth Barbour will be building on her existing experience as our very capable secretary to plan our programme of evening lectures into the 2023/24 season.  We are excited to sample her new programme, further details of which can be found on our events page, together with information on when and where we meet.

Richard Chamberlaine-Brothers Retires

The Society is exceptionally grateful to Richard Chamberlaine-Brothers, who, prior to his retirement, compiled the Bilbliography published in the WLHS Journal for the last 40 years.  This Bibliography is also accessible on our website and now comprises 150 pages.  Members of the Committee recently presented him with a bound copy of the Bibliography at Warwickshire County Record Office. Another bound copy was donated to the Record Office.  You can access the latest Bibliography by visiting our Publications Page
